A Positive Mental Attitude Affects Your Health

Staying healthy is an important and vital part of life. According to studies, there are various social and psychological factors that can play a role in maintaining a healthy heart:

  • Practicing yoga or meditating
  • Being married
  • A strong social network
  • Not perceiving oneself as anxious

It was discovered that individuals who excelled in these four areas had better outcomes in several cardiovascular studies.

Positive Proof For Positive Heart Health

In one study, yoga and meditation seemed to relax arteries in people suffering from cardiovascular disease. The study involved 33 people (with and without cardiovascular disease) who took three yoga and meditation classes each week for six weeks. Researchers found that 69 percent of those with cardiovascular disease experienced an improvement in artery dilation.

It was also found that social support, especially being married, reduced the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease.

In another study of individuals with a history of heart failure, it was discovered that those who perceived themselves as anxious and had low levels of social support were more likely to be re-admitted to the hospital.

Finally, researchers found that social factors predicted the development of depression among individuals with heart failure. Such social factors include:

  • Living alone
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Health status
  • Feelings of drowning under medical bills

As an individual increases the amount of these above social factors in their life, they increase the chance of succumbing to depression.

Luminary: Will Arntz

William Arntz is the producer, director, and screenwriter behind the breakthrough film, What the #$*! Do We Know?. He is also president of Captured Light Productions.

William Arntz graduated summa cum laude in 1972 from Penn State University with a degree in Engineering Science and accepted employment as a Research Physicist with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. There he worked on developing the first wave optics simulator for high-energy gas dynamic laser weapons (a.k.a. “Star Wars”). After two years of corporate life, William “retired,” and drove around the country. Eventually he ended up in Boston where he reunited with a longtime friend who was enrolled in the Master’s Degree film program at Boston University. Together they created, Beat the Deva, a one-hour animated film noir, which won a Cine Eagle, the Kenyon Film Festival, and received distribution on the art house circuit.

Upon completion of the film in 1980, William moved to California to pursue a film career, but found the process of moving up through the ranks daunting and less than ideal. So he moved to San Francisco, “retired”, and became a Buddhist. By the late 80’s his Buddhist teacher assigned him the task using his meditation/visualization skills to create a software product and company, which was to become a huge success. Lacking the common sense to realize what he was up against, he took $100,000 in savings, no business experience, and sat down and in 5 months wrote “AutoSys” – a distributed job scheduler. The skills must have worked, for AutoSys went on to be one of the most widely used pieces of System Management software ever written, with clients as diverse as Merrill Lynch, NASA, ILM, Sun Microsystems, Cisco, and Boeing.

In 1995 William Arntz sold his company and took a year off. He then devised a second successful software company, which he sold nine months after creating it. After “retiring” for the 3rd time he became interested in uniting his 4 great interests: (1) leading edge science, (2) spiritual inquiry, (3) filmmaking and (4) computers. After realizing that with the success of his two software companies he had succeeded in bypassing the onerous task of rising through the ranks, he happily (despite still lacking common sense) embarked upon the creation of What the #$*! Do We Know? ( www.whatthebleep.com )

Aspartame Causes Cancer in Rats at Levels Currently Approved for Humans

A statistically significant increase in the incidence of malignant tumors, lymphomas and leukemias in rats exposed to varying doses of aspartame appears to link the artificial sweetener to a high carcinogenicity rate, according to a study accepted for publication today by the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP). The authors of the study, the first to demonstrate multipotential carcinogenic effects of aspartame administered to rats in feed, called for an "urgent reevaluation" of the current guidelines for the use and consumption of this compound.

Aspartame is the second most widely used artificial sweetener in the world. It is found in more than 6,000 products including carbonated and powdered soft drinks, hot chocolate, chewing gum, candy, desserts, yogurt, and tabletop sweeteners, as well as some pharmaceutical products like vitamins and sugar-free cough drops. More than 200 million people worldwide consume it. The sweetener has been used for more than 30 years, having first been approved by the FDA in 1974. Studies of the carcinogenicity of aspartame performed by its producers have been negative.

Researchers administered aspartame to Sprague-Dawley rats by adding it to a standard diet. They began studying the rats at 8 weeks of age and continued until the spontaneous death of each rat. Treatment groups received feed that contained concentrations of aspartame at dosages simulating human daily intakes of 5,000, 2,500, 500, 100, 20, and 4 mg/kg body weight. Groups consisted of 100 males and 100 females at each of the three highest dosages and 150 males and 150 females at all lower dosages and controls.

The experiment ended after the death of the last animal at 159 weeks. At spontaneous death, each animal underwent examination for microscopic changes in all organs and tissues, a process different from the aspartame studies conducted 30 years ago and one that was designed to allow aspartame to fully express any carcinogenic potential.

The treated animals showed extensive evidence of malignant cancers including lymphomas, leukemias, and tumors at multiple organ sites in both males and females. The authors speculate the increase in lymphomas and leukemias may be related to one of the metabolites in aspartame, namely methanol, which is metabolized in both rats and humans to formaldehyde. Both methanol and formaldehyde have shown links to lymphomas and leukemias in other long-term experiments by the same authors.

The current study included more animals over a longer period than earlier studies. "In our opinion, previous studies did not comply with today's basic requirements for testing the carcinogenic potential of a physical or chemical agent, in particular concerning the number of rodents for each experimental group (40-86, compared to 100-150 in the current study) and the termination of previous studies at only 110 weeks of age of the animals," the study authors wrote.
