Unlocking
the Secrets of Longevity Genes You can
assume quite a bit about the state of a used car just from its mileage and
model year. The wear and tear of heavy driving and the passage of time will
have taken an inevitable toll. The same
appears to be true of aging in people, but the analogy is flawed because of a
crucial difference between inanimate machines and living creatures:
deterioration is not inexorable in biological systems, which can respond to
their environments and use their own energy to defend and repair themselves. At one time,
scientists believed aging to be not just deterioration but an active
continuation of an organism's genetically programmed development. Once an
individual achieved maturity, "aging genes" began to direct its progress
toward the grave. This idea has been discredited, and conventional wisdom now
holds that aging really is just wearing out over time because the body's normal
maintenance and repair mechanisms simply wane. Evolutionary natural selection,
the logic goes, has no reason to keep them working once an organism has passed
its reproductive age. Yet we and
other researchers have found that a family of genes involved in an organism's
ability to withstand a stressful environment, such as excessive heat or scarcity
of food or water, have the power to keep its natural defense and repair
activities going strong regardless of age. By optimizing the body's functioning
for survival, these genes maximize the individual's chances of getting through
the crisis. And if they remain activated long enough, they can also
dramatically enhance the organism's health and extend its life span. In
essence, they represent the opposite of aging genes--longevity genes. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa006&colID=1&articleID=000B73EB-3380-13F6-B38083414B7F0000
Two recent studies have confirmed
that women like men who are funny, whereas men like women who laugh at their
jokes. Women Find Humor Important In one study, some 200 college
students ranked the attractiveness of men and women based on pictures featuring
captions ranging from the bland to hilarious. Men weren't influenced by the
captions, but women were; photos of men accompanied with funnier captions were
considered more attractive and better potential partners to women. Wit or Appreciation? In the second study, researchers
asked more than 125 students about the kind of person of the opposite sex with
whom they preferred to be in a relationship: A joker or someone who appreciated a
partner's sense of humor. Generally, men preferred women, they
believed, who appreciated their sense of humor, while women liked funny guys. The Genetics of Humor According to
one theory, these tendencies could be rooted in evolution; women may prefer
funny men because wit demonstrates creativity and intelligence, and therefore a
good set of genes. Nature.com
January 23, 2006 Get
Some Sun and Breathe Better! New findings indicate that vitamin D
could help make it easier to breathe. People with higher levels of the vitamin
in their systems had better lung function. For the study, data was collected on
over 14,000 people over a period of 6 years. Those who had higher levels of
vitamin D were able to inhale and exhale more air. The study also found that
levels of the vitamin were higher in men, and tended to lessen as people
aged or gained weight. Vitamin D can be found in certain
foods, as well as dietary supplements, but most people obtain it from sunlight.
The exact relationship between the vitamin and lung health is still unclear. Recent studies
have also suggested that Vitamin D may help strengthen bones, prevent some
cancers, and help protect against multiple sclerosis. http://www.mercola.com/2005/dec/27/get_some_sun_and_breathe_better.htm
