MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK . . .

“It is very important that you do not compare your actions to your partner's or judge your partner's behavior as unskillful. Rather, focus on your own actions and take responsibility for them. Recall those times when you looked into your partner's eyes and saw the pain you caused this person you love to suffer. If you can admit your own faults, if you can see how hurtful your actions were and tap into a sense of concern for your partner's well-being, then compassion and loving-friendliness will flow.”

    Attitudinal Healing

This is one of the main keys in eliminating negativity. It does take discipline to do this, but it is well worth making the effort for. When you start you will notice many subtle layers of negativity within your consciousness. Don't feel bad about them as we all have them, every single human being. There is the top, obvious layer of "I cant's" and the like. Once you start dealing with this you will become aware of other layers below this, which are much more subtly woven into your consciousness. Since you will have spent time making yourself aware of the negativity by then, you will find it much easier to spot and remove these subtler forms.

Once you have spotted them of course, you need to replace them with something. You can do this with Positive Visualisations or Affirmations. You can also change it then and there, with a powerful mental image of positivity.

We also hold cultural beliefs. These are beliefs that are programmed into us by the society we grow up in. These relate to our social status, ethnic group, geographical region, religion, and nationality. For example, those born into high social standing often have beliefs that people without money are below them. Certain ethnic groups are brought up with the belief that they are not as good as other ethnic groups.

One thing to remember here is not to use generalities. You may have been taught that all Communists are bad people, but they are not. There are good Communists who care for other people as there are good and bad Americans, British, Japanese, and so on. This applies to all of our cultural beliefs. Not all rich people are mean, not all poor people are thieves, not all religious people are pompous, etc.

Attitudinal healing is about challenging all these beliefs. It is like looking after your garden, where your mind is your garden. You do not want weeds and debris cluttering your garden, and nor do you want them in your mind. You have to go through and weed out the thoughts that serve no purpose and you do not want, or need, there. Remember though that this is not a one off process, it is a continual process. As new weeds always grow, new thoughts and patterns are always entering our minds, but as we follow this path so we stop them from taking root and making themselves at home.

To effect these changes does require some discipline on your part, as often negativity creeps in from the most surprising avenues. However, after a short period of time you will find that eliminating negativity will become a habit and you will be catching the thoughts before they can even get into your mind.

Laughter Proves Good Medicine for Heart

Lacking a sense of humor might not just be bad for your social life, it might also be harming your cardiovascular health. A new study shows that laughter actually increases blood flow in the body, proving right the old adage that laughter is the best medicine, at least when it comes to the heart.

Cardiologist Michael Miller and colleagues at the University of Maryland tested blood flow in 20 healthy men and women after they watched 15-to-30-minute clips of the comedy movies Kingpin and There's Something About Mary and a stressful film, the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan. The researchers measured blood flow both before each viewing and one minute after it ended. "We wanted to see whether laughter induced a vascular response," Miller explains.

Prior research inspired the team to conduct the experiment. A series of questionnaires administered to sufferers of coronary heart disease by the cardiologists revealed that patients who had suffered a heart attack failed to find the humor in a situation, such as wearing the same outfit to a party, 40 percent more often than their healthy counterparts. "We didn't know whether that was cause and effect or just part and parcel of having the disease," Miller says.

They decided to investigate the possible healthy effects of laughter by measuring vascular dilation after people chuckled at funny bits or reacted to intense images. In total, the researchers gathered 160 measurements of blood flow in the brachial artery, which connects the shoulder and elbow, from the 10 men and 10 women. While laughing, 19 of the subjects increased healthy blood flow by an average of 22 percent. And comparing the amused and stressful states brought on by film clips, more than 50 percent more blood flowed when laughing, according to the paper published in the current issue of Heart.

In fact, being light-hearted boosted blood flow about the same amount as light exercise or drugs that lower cholesterol. Drama-induced stress, on the other hand, cut that rate by as much as angry memories or mental calculations. "What that suggests, at the very least, is that laughter on a regular basis will undo some of the excess stress we face in our everyday lives," Miller notes. "Patients at risk for cardiovascular disease should loosen up a bit."

The Positive Weight Loss Approach

Once you have made up your mind to lose weight, you should make that commitment and go into it with a positive attitude. We all know that losing weight can be quite a challenge. In fact, for some, it can be downright tough. It takes time, practice and support to change lifetime habits. But it's a process you must learn in order to succeed. It is said that if you do something for 21 days it will become a habit. You and you alone are the one who has the power to lose unwanted pounds.

Think Like a Winner

Think like a winner, and not a loser - - remember that emotions are like muscles and the ones you use most grow the strongest. If you always look at the negative side of things, you'll become a downbeat, pessimistic person. Even slightly negative thoughts have a greater impact on you and last longer than powerful positive thoughts.

Negative thinking doesn't do you any good, it just holds you back from accomplishing the things you want to do. When a negative thought creeps into your mind, replace it reminding yourself that you're somebody, you have self-worth and you possess unique strengths and talents.

Contemplate what lies ahead of you. Losing weight is not just about diets. It's about a whole new you and the possibility of creating a new life for yourself. Investigate the weight loss programs that appeal to you and that you feel will teach you the behavioral skills you need to stick with throughout the weight-loss process.
